David W. Glidden, President and CEO of Middletown-based Liberty Bank, recently announced that Liberty Bank Foundation recently made a $25,000 contribution to The Hundred Club of Connecticut. The donation pays tribute to Connecticut law enforcement officers, firefighters and correction officers who tragically lost their lives while protecting and serving fellow citizens.

The Hundred Club of Connecticut is a nonprofit organization founded in 1967 that is dedicated to easing the financial burdens of the surviving spouse and children of police officers, firefighters and correction officers who died in the line of duty. To date, they have provided over $14,000,000 to help families of loved ones who have made the supreme sacrifice.

This Liberty Bank Foundation grant will assist to support families, such as Bristol Police Officers Lieutenant Dustin DeMonte and Sergeant Alex Hamzy who very tragically lost their lives on October 12, 2022 while responding to a 9-1-1 call. More recently, North Haven Firefighter Matthias Wirtz, who passed away on December 26, 2022 while battling a house fire, will also benefit from this donation.

“Most of us cannot fully comprehend the heartache families endure after losing a loved one in the line of duty, yet we can appreciate the financial challenges families face when someone we depend on unexpectedly passes away,” said David W. Glidden, Liberty Bank President and CEO. “Proudly, the Liberty Team will always do our part to support community members during difficult times and to honor our fallen heroes, just as we’ve done for the past 197 years. In addition, we will continue to keep the DeMonte, Hamzy and Wirtz families – as well as the Bristol Police Department and North Haven Fire Department – in our thoughts and prayers.”

The support by The Hundred Club includes an initial grant of $10,000 to the surviving spouse/family; Fixed Indebtedness Program; computers for their children; scholarships to colleges and vocational schools; Special Assistance Program for any medical and dental services; Birthday Savings Program for children; four weeks of summer camp up to age 18; and a Holiday Remembrance Fund.
