Jennifer Height Gives Back to Her Community
A decade ago, Jennifer Height was hired by Liberty Bank. During her job interview, she asked about the importance of volunteering. Giving back to her community is important to her, and she wanted to make sure she worked for an organization that had similar values. Height took the job and is now the Branch Manager in Moodus. When the Bank’s brand promise became be “Community Kind,” she was quietly cheering. “It isn’t just words,” she said, explaining that Liberty teammates make good on this promise every day.
“If we don’t support each other, you can’t make a difference,” Height said. “They’ll be no changes in the world.”
Height does her part by volunteering with East Haddam Youth & Family Services, and she volunteers to do tax filings for senior citizens through the Volunteer Income Assistance program and AARP. As a hobby, she crochets and donates any hats, shawls or blankets to the local senior center to be sold at a craft fair that raises money for Meals on Wheels.
Height, the mother of two adult children, says she volunteers because she has the time to do so. However, her reasons for helping those specific organizations are a bit more personal.
“These are the people I see in the Branch and in the community,” Height explained. “I want to give back to my community.”
She also knows what it is like to receive help from her neighbors. When her children were small, Height moved to East Haddam. They didn’t have much, and it was East Haddam Youth & Family Services that helped her out. Most notably, the nonprofit provided Christmas presents for her family one year. “It was the first year that we bought our house,” she said. “That was our introduction to the Moodus, East Haddam area.”
Fast forward several years and Height now helps others who find themselves in a similar situation. She is treasurer of East Haddam Youth & Family Services and a member of the Board of Directors. As part of her duties, she is the treasurer for the local food bank – a job that has become increasingly more important given today’s challenges.
Through her actions – and her hobbies – Height is the change she wants to see in the world, and she is just one example of Liberty teammates being Community Kind.
